This article explains how to create and configure categories for your online store.
Categories enable you to organize your products into logical groups so that your customers can easily find them.
If you selected to install samples, by default categories are visible in the front-end of your store. Categories will be displayed on the homepage for a default theme however you can also use the category module to show them anywhere on your store page with a unique display.
You can add as many subcategories as you want to your root category. A vendor can add unlimited subcategories but cannot add subcategories under the admin root category. They can only add subcategories under the vendor root category. In order to accomplish this you will need to set the correct setting in the Vendor Preference.
You can assign a product to as many categories as you want. The application also makes it easy for you to change your category layouts, each category can be a different presentation and determine how they behave.
To understand this idea better, let’s follow with an example.

In other words, Category A items will be displayed differently and only featured products will be showing compare to Category B with latest products showing.
Categories are used to organize products into logical groups, so your customers can easily find them.
To create a new category, do the following:
Step 1 — In the Admin panel, select Components -> jMarket -> Catalog -> Categories.
Step 2 — Add a new top level (root) category, click New.
Step 3 — Fill in all the required fields, which are indicated by a red asterisk (*). Most of the options obtain a tooltip that will help you explain its usage.
Step 4 — At the bottom option "Parent", click Top to create a top level (root) category. To add a subcategory, click New and at the bottom option "Parent", click on the category name in which you want to make a subcategory.
Step 5 — In the Publishing Tab, set proper access to the category and specify Meta Information that search engines can use to index your store’s product pages.
Step 6 — And in the Layout Tab, configure the correct setting for your category. If you prefer to use the general preference In the Catalog so that all categories will be displayed the same layout. You can leave this option or make sure the setting "Use Custom Layout >> No".
Step 6 — Click [ Save ] to save your changes.
There are two ways of assigning products to categories — From the Category page, and from the Product page.
1. Assign products to a category using — Category Page
Step 1 — In the Edit Category page, you can assign multiple products with the category by clicking Products (0) under Assign column in the category listing.
Step 2 — A pop-up window will show all the list of products (published or unpublished) that are available in your site.
Step 3 — Click the X icon to assign a product or click the check box to select multiple products.
Step 4 — When you are finished, click Close to close the pop-up window and it automatically save the assigned products.
2. Assign products to a category using — Product Page
You can use any of the two options;
2.1 From the Product page
Step 1— In the Admin panel, select Components -> jMarket -> Catalog -> Product
Step 2 — Click New / Edit product, in the General tab you have a pick-list to select which category you want to assign the product.
Step 3 — Select the category you want that product to appear in.
Step 4 — Click [ Save ] to save your changes.
2.2 From the Product Listing
Step 1 — In the admin panel, Select Components -> jMarket-> Catalog
Step 2 — In the product listing, click Categories: [ 0 ] under Assign column just after the Name Column.
Step 3 — A pop-up window will show all the list of products (published or unpublished) that are available in your site.
Step 4 — Click the X icon to assign a product or click the check box to select multiple products.
Step 5 — When you are finished, click Close to close the pop-up window and it automatically save the assigned products.
