Error: [] operator not supported for strings

2 months 3 weeks ago #5068 by Goran Aasen
Hi there,
I am using Joomla 3.8.12, JNews Core 9.2.1, on php 7.1
jNews core has been working perfectly for years, but I have now got into trouble.

I get the error "[] operator not supported for strings" when I click on LISTS - Create/View Mailings.

This problem only happened after I upgraded to PHP 7.1

A quick Google on the problem pointed me in the direction of the PHP version. This as it seem to be a problem with other extensions aswell.

If I downgrade PHP to the outdated 7.0.31 it all works again.

Anyone know if there is there a way of fixing this in jNews as it is of course not desireable to stay with PHP 7.0.31 as that version of PHP is out of support since 2018-09-03

We released a new version of jNews today 9.3.1 you should be able to update from Joomla backend, let us know if that fix the issue.

I will definitely try this out.

My Joomla backend does not show any updates, and your website still only show the 9.2.1 version.

Where do I find the 9.3.1 version?

It does not show probably because you need to click on check for updates.
anyway here is the link to the new package: https://joobi.co/joobi/user/updates/jnewscore9.3.1.zip

Thanks a lot, that version removed that specific error on php 7.1.
I will do some more testing, but it all look good so far.

Again, thanks a lot.

Hi Ruodrik,
is there any way to get noticed when your are publishing new releases? Eventually with changelog?
Had similar problems as Goran and could have avoided some work if I'd know there'd been updates :-)

Thx in advance,
Ralf

Ralf,
jNews works with Joomla updates system, so when there is a new release available you will be notified by Joomla updates menu.
Best regards.

Thx for clarifying. My version was 8.9.3, may be the update integration came later?

You have a Pro version and it is older than 9.x so the notification was not yet installed in those version.
Moreover if your license is older than 1 year you will need a new license for the update. Feel free to submit a ticket since you have a Pro version.
